A referral is a written order from your primary care doctor for you to see a specialist or get certain medical services. Some health insurance plans, particularly HMOs, require a referral before they will cover specialist visits. Typically, PPOs and EPOs do not require a referral and some HMO plans offer a “no referral” option.
